BETWEEN SEA AND MARAIS POITEVIN
Mareuil sur Lay is an old port city marked by its proximity to the sea, an a vital link between the ocean and the Marais Poitevin.
It was home to the barges (gabares) that travelled up the Lay, carrying salt in particular.
The precious cargo was unloaded and transported, passing through the “rue des gabares” (street of the barge) which led to the underground cellars, dug into the rock, like caves that could exceed ten meters deep.
Historic holidays at the Couleurs Vendée holiday village.
